Kenshukai Aikido @ Bandar Puchong Jaya

In the many things I enjoy doing, practising Aikido is one of the many. Today I'm going to tell you more about my other fitness/martial art past time.

How I started Aikido?
I started learning Aikido is because of my passion in martial arts. And I enjoy most is Japanese martial arts. Well, it has double purpose though. One of it is to learn self defense and the other is to pick up the Japanese language.

Where I found the place?
The story of how I found the place is just memorable for me. It was one fine day that I was in Subang Parade (the place still exist), and they were having a public demonstration on the techniques. I stood by the crowd and watched. As when one of the demonstrator flipped his opponent, my reaction was... "oh cool!!" ; the guy stood next to me looked seriously surprised. Then I took a flyer/brochure and contacted the person in charge.

Why I took up?
The reason why I took up Aikido was because I find it cool, and also with the intention of combining two martial arts into one. The one that I've obtained has some flaws that can be modified and created to a better technique. I'm obviously not thinking if the rules & regulations in tournaments allows it or not.

Did it happen? My idea of combining for tournament side?
Nahh.... As I learned the art, the more humble we became. Nice and mellowed down. Why fight when you don't need to? Violence is not the answer or solution to anything.

My first day...
The first day was quite a unique one. When I called the Instructor, he mentioned that I should wear the "gi" that I use for karate. I came in my karate gi. (Note: Gi means uniform) Oh...I didn't mentioned the belt I was wearing....hahahaha. I was wearing a solid black and then I felt super awkward because everybody started to bow at me. That situation never happened before or to say rarely happened when I was in karate.

Do I still practice Aikido?
That's a very good question. Yes & No. At the moment, I will occasionally go to the Dojo to practice Aikido and also to meet the people there. A place where I can always call home. They are so friendly, and welcoming. Sometimes, the sensei or sempai's will ask me this question... what wind blows you here?

When are the classes?
Adults sessions is on Tuesdays & Thursdays 8.30pm - 9.30pm

A little history of Kenshukai Aikido at Puchong
Aikido Kenshukai (formally was called He Qi Dao Yan Xiu Hui, 合气道研修会) was formed by the late Mr Foo Chee Juan Sensei (3rd Dan) in Year 1992 in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. Mr Foo was a keen aikidoka and long time practitioner of Aikido, Judo and Qi Gong since the early 70s from many popular sensei in Malaysia and Japan. The Japanese name of Aikido Kenshukai with the same meaning of He Qi Dao Yan Xiu Hui was formally adopted in Year 2003 when a new center was established in Puchong.

The late Foo sensei started teaching aikido in Seremban in Year 1992 with a few students from Seremban and Kuala Lumpur. Amongst the students were Tee Cheng Sum, Kan Yew Cheong, Thomas Lai, Lee Siow Hong, Norman Onn and others from YMCA Aikido club where he taught aikido for some times. In Year 1997, Foo sensei started a new center in Sunway Lagoon Club, Bandar Sunway and he had been teaching since then with the helps of Lee, Kan and Norman until his passing away in May 2001. His class was very popular among the senior students from many aikido clubs in Selangor due to his simple approach of aikido style.

The late Foo sensei approach towards the learning of aikido has been centred around the two words, Yan (研) and Xiu (修) meaning study and practice towards perfection. His no nonsense and direct approach toward the learning of aikido has earned his reputation and liken by many students under his tutorage.  His philosophy in Aikido has been carried on by his students, Lee and Kan until today in Aikido Kenshukai Dojo.

Aikido Kenshukai Dojo harness a unique concept where the dojo is managed and run by a committee of sensei and students and it is a non-profitable set up. Its principle is to provide a dojo where students of aikido can learn and practice aikido techniques and study together with sensei and student alike in the pursue of aikido art. The current Aikido Kenshukai Dojo Cho is Lee Siow Hong sensei and assisted by Kan Yew Cheong sensei. Many senior yudansha graduated from Aikido Kenshukai have also contributed towards the running and development of this dojo over the years.

Aikido Kenshukai is a member of Aikikai Malaysia and it is affiliated to Hombu Dojo Japan and recently the dojo has been moved from Bandar Puteri Puchong to Bandar Puchong Jaya, opposite IOI mall in Puchong.
